Welcome To Puppyville

Your destination for goofiness and trying times!

They TELL me she is a year old.

But she is acting like 4 months.

Everything must be tasted. Or goofed with. Or pulled off a table.
I swear this dog needs a pacifier. Yesterday I was patting her head and she reached around and grabbed my thumb and actually sucked on in a couple of times.

This explains so much. . .

She is becoming famous for barking at us or at Sunny or all three of us when we are acting like sane, calm beings who want to have a snooze or read or knit or watch tv. She thinks there's not enough action going on and it's time to PLAY. NOW! Let's get GOING!

And she has this puppy/dog bark that sounds pretty much like this:

Yark Yark Yark !!!

If she were a Shakespeare character, her line would be:

"Yark! What light through yonder playground breaks? It's boring here and running is our friend!"

What a pistol!

(Are you bragging or complaining about this creature?)

Er. . . Both.

(Figures.)

Are there any two dogs so much unalike as Jo Jo and Yarky?

She's going to be quite a challenge, and probably needs to go to a family that hikes and skates and runs around a lot. No matter how "socialized" she is, I'd bet my last dollar that she'll never be sedentary.

Bones. Soup bones. Lots of them. Raw (cooked will splinter, raw will not). If you're crate training her, designate a (for lack of a better phrase) "nap time", where she is in her crate with a nice, meaty soup bone to munch on for a while.

I did this with Shelby, and after about two days as it approached 1:00 she would stand in front of her crate staring at me until I got the bone from the fridge and put her into the crate with it.

With multiple dogs, I had to take the bone and put it away (garbage if it was all chewed-out, fridge in a zip-lock if there was still some chewing left to it) so the other dogs didn't fight over it.

Kongs are another good pacifier. Plug the small end, and fill it with chicken broth, beef broth, or pureed fruits and veggies in a broth, then freeze it. Give that as an alternative to bones in the crate. Do this on bath day (trust me on this).

    Good luck!

OMG! She is a beautiful dog!!!! I applaud you for fostering :). It must be so hard to give them up tho. I'd love to do that but our one dog will not tolerate anything with 4 legs anywhere near her property. She even thinks the Amish horses that go by are big dogs! LOL! This half yorkie, half chihuahua, rules the roost and there are no doubts about it. No fear of anything. Good for you!

The yarking thing would drive me nuts.
    But that's just me. :o)
Good advice about the bones and kong toy. Kongs are a good doggy pacifier. So are chew bones. I get the retriever sticks at Wal-Mart. Leena and Tootsie love them. They keep them occupied for hours.
    Good luck, yarkinator.

I have no puppy training wisdom to impart, but I can offer sympathy and might I suggest extra vitamins.... not for the pup, but for you so you'll be able to keep up with the pup. :)

I have been really busy lately. Do you have any idea why I haven't been getting your 'Notifies'?
Take care. The lake was beautiful with all the huge rocks.

    Take care.

Sounds like you'll be getting pretty active with this puppy around. ;-)
