Where have I been?

Babysitting three granddaughters most of last week.  8 and 9 years old if you must know.

There was no bloodletting, so I count it as a success.

I have also been given a gift.

I thought for sure we were going to lose the peaches to disease again this year. But I was wrong. Yes, there ARE some on the tree that shriveled, some that rotted on the tree. However there are a LOT of them that are going to make it.

I wasn't quite prepared for this possibility, so I am scrambling to get my act together for preserving. I have a counter full of them this morning that won't be ripe for another day or two, but here's the kicker. My neighbor has a peach tree too and several branches are hanging over my fence... thusly:

Dear neighbor needs lessons in pruning, needless to say. And the good news is our tree is ripening sooner, so at least we don't have them coming on all at once. But we will be carting peaches all over to family and friends. Ahem... this means you D. Get ready.  ;-)

What else is going on?

Scotty's owner is once again in the hospital. God bless her and Scotty got dropped off to us yesterday.

Now we are officially a mob.

Dogs follow me everywhere.

In this picture, Scotty looks bigger than Classy, but really, Classy, small as she is, is taller than Scotty. He just looks bigger because of all that hair.

Doggies doggies everywhere.
Hair is flying,
I don't care.

Dog bones crunching,
water splashing.
Paw prints marking,
too much barking.

Some days
I don't know what to do.
And wonder why
my life's a zoo.

The answer is quite simple.
You are mad as a hatter.
And I'm stuck here in bedlam.
With peaches ripening all around
and laundry to be done
and dust as thick as a blanket
on every surface.
Windows smeared by dog noses....
We need reinforcements.

(Don't look at me. I don't do windows.)

Or anything else come to think of it.

WOOF!

Even the dogs agree on this point.

(I'm going in the other room and read the dictionary. I do not wish to be disturbed.)

Good luck with that.

WOOF!

Glad to see you're back and have survived the experience. Dogs are somewhat easier than young girls, though not by much *laffs*.

Can't wait to see what happens with all of those peaches!

First off, I'd move the dictionary to the living room. () may not do windows, but should be a natural at bracketing dogs!

Those peaches look fabulous. I can almost smell the peach preserves, peach jam, peach syrup, peach pie, peach cobbler......... I'm hungry just thinkin' about it. :)

I hope that "D" means me!!! Cause I don't think any of my peaches will make it this year.
    *sigh* and *sniff*
Got me beat in doggie numbers, but still not in total pets. You're still one shy of total craziness.
I'm going back to my new quilt books now. :o)

Where's Fiona??? What does she think about all this canine invasion?

Scotty is shorter than Classy? He's really small. I hope his two-legged companion gets well quickly.

    Peaches? Peaches?

    Bless

If you have a dehydrator, fruit leather is really delicious and easy, too!

Skin 'em, pit 'em and hack 'em up. Cook 'em in a pot with the juice of a lemon and sugar to taste just until softened. Let 'em cool and run 'em through the food processor, food mill or even a potato masher if you cook 'em a bit longer. Tear narrow strips of waxed paper and tape inside a dehydrator so they fit two to a shelf. Spread a little peach goop (between 1/8th and 1/4 inch thick) on the waxed paper strips and dehydrate until chewy. Pull 'em out, roll 'em up so the waxed paper ends up on the outside and store 'em in a zipper bag. They won't last long enough to worry about spoilage.

This is a lot easier than it sounds and will work with most any fruit. Really, I swear. Tomatoes can even be done this way, you just season them differently, either savory with a little vinegar, basil, salt and pepper, or sweet with cinnamon sticks, cloves and star anise. (I can send you my tomato jam recipe if you want it. It's fabulous on grilled chicken or bland fish like tilapia.)

I'm ready when you are - thanks! Ooooh I can't wait! I have some carrots and green onions for you rightnow. Not as exciting as peaches, but they both are very sweet and tasty.

Wait a minute - Scottie? Have I missed or forgotten something here? You have one more dog than I remember you having! It is an offical zoo at your house!

I love that your house is full of dogs. I do believe that my home (once the kids have moved out, and I am semi-retired), will be a shelter home, too! Quite an interesting and engaging endeavor--not one I could undertake presently, but certainly something I shall put on my List for the future!
