"You Fought With My Father In The Vole Wars?"
Tue Jul 06 2010

You will excuse me if I yawn a little bit while typing this entry... I was awakened at three in the morning by three dogs who were SURE someone was up to no good in the backyard. I let the thundering herd out, managing to keep them quiet while they patrolled the perimeter. They found nothing and we trooped back in the house where I proceeded to stay awake. Oh joy.

But come morning it turned out they were right. Fiona had dispatched a vole and left him under the bedroom window in an artful though macabre pose, hoping for the maximum shock value.

She succeeded.

I decided I needed to move the small pile of wood we keep near the fire pot on the patio, as that is where the voles have been cavorting. Ben digs through it on a regular basis and makes a mess of it. Anyway, Sara was out eating her breakfast on the patio and the other two were in the house. I started moving the pile. When I got down to the last few pieces, I was convinced the vole had move on to greener pastures, but boink!, here he came out from under a board. Sara was RIGHT on him in a trice. She hurled him into the air where he did a nice flip and caught him on the first bounce. I shouldn't mention the squeak he made, but alas, the unfortunate thing DID squeak pitifully. She hurried off with him wriggling in her jaws. I SO didn't want her to eat him.... I grabbed the bucket I was using to carry wood in and caught her by the collar just as she took a good chomp and crushed the poor beastie's skull. OY. I put the bucket under her chin and convinced her to drop him. She did. Thank goodness.

It was interesting to see her in action. Seems to me she has done this kind of thing before.

Funny.

She doesn't look like a killer....

Good.
We don't need voles messing around
in our back yard.
About time one of these dogs
earned it's keep.

(Will someone please help me?)

You're right, she looks far too innocent to be a killer. You've got to admire her technique though! Not many dogs manage to get a bounce in before catching a critter again!

She doesn't look any more a murderer than Maggie but Mags spent weeks stalking a mouse in our garage then managed to get the little bugger in a most grizzley attack. We've got some fierce warrior princesses, don't we?

I look at some dogs and have a hard time seeing the wolf within, but I guess it's always lurking there, deep inside.

I know voles are a pest, and all that, but I'm with Little Miss Sunshine.

I see a dog with talent; a dog truly willing to earn her keep. Bravo Sara, bravo!

I wish I had that kind of talent working around here.
