The Perils Of Technology
Wed Apr 20 2011

Oh how precariously we are balanced on the edge of the ones and the zeros...

There we were, minding our own business....

All we wanted to do was to vacuum out the copious dustbunnies from my computer's innards yesterday morning. A worthy pursuit of cleanliness and prudent computer ownership... right?

Alas, disaster struck. Hub Man accidentally severed my compter's brain stem. Its medula oblongata is toast. Its nerve endings flail about like the Borg Queen in that Star Trek movie. Tzzt, tzzt, tzzt.

Zounds!

We have floated out several options for a replacement, including an in depth look at going over to the dark side and getting an IMac. Oh those Apples are so shiney! Just like the one that the evil queen offered to Snow White.

I am sending this to you from Hub Man's computer. I am officially just a 'guest' here with my own log in etc. But it feels sort of like wearing someone else's underwear if you know what I mean.

No?

That's okay. I'm in a weird mind space today. This whole thing has thrown me into my usual Luddite existential meltdown mode. Not unlike operating your computer in 'safe mode'. Things look wonky, and you just KNOW if you ask it to do too much, it's gonna crash and reboot on you.

It may be a little while before I'm back up and running as usual, but that of course is the problem, after giving it the deep think last night before going to bed, I decided in my relationship with computers, there IS no normal. It's just a series of fantasical promises and bitter betrayals interspersed with happy moments watching my fellow humans on You Tube, and being inspired by people half way around the world.

My God, computers make my head hurt.

I shall be using my time differently for some days to come. Knitting is taking center stage as I will be embarking on a new project that is near and dear to my heart today. And I will also be scribbling with old fashioned tools an essay along the lines of a Greek tragedy about the compters I have known. . .

(I guess this means it won't have a happy ending.... Sounds like fun!)

If there are spelling errors on this page, they are entirely my fault, my fault my most grievious fault. I left my spell checker on bloggar.... which, oh my god, I will have to reinstall when I get the new computer. Today I feel like Marvin in Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Look it up on the tubes.

Can anything good come from this?

Stay tuned.

Don't forget your towel.

And thanks for all the fish.

Make mine salmon if you please.

(Someone hit the off button on her will you? I see a twitch in her eye. She's starting to overheat. Must be the dustbunnies. Where's that vacuum cleaner?)

Noooooooooooooooooo!!!!!

Tzzt, tzzt, tzzt.

You just may finally be losing it, SIL.
That last part was a little over the top. LOL

But now that you are on Hub Man's computer, I could click and get right to your entry instead of having to go the long way around. Might want to think on that one. Like...WHY?

So sorry to hear about your computer!! ACCCCCK! I hope you find thw perfect replacement quickly. I took my crashed hard drive to Staples for them to retrieve the files on it - sigh they are wiped clean. Nada. Zip. Letf me shaking and in tears. I had an entire family cookbook (vol 3) on it that i stupidly did not backup. Shoot me now. Of course I di not know what all the new recipes I made in 2009 or all the old ones I came across and added to that cookbook. i have a few options to find some hopfully but it will be a long and time consuming process.
Computers give me heartburn they do!

lol oh my yes, should I be worried that this entry makes complete and utter resounding sense to me in every way?

After the 'incident' last year where my beloved Dell died and looked to be gone for good I had a similar meltdown. Sure I still had easy acess to a computer but it wasnt MY computer. I wasn't even going to lose files but it still hit hard. We bought a shiny new laptop before my one decided to pull a complete resurection but that one sits laregly untouched even now as it just wasnt eh SAME and given the option I prefer whhat I know and love to whats new and shiny :) though I have to admit windows 7 beats the pants of vista.

I have my towel and I'll take the salmon too thanks.

and the word from the geek in the corner...clean is good, espcially if you dont want your fan to up and die on you from dustbunny leavings but use canned air or for stubborn fiddly bits a high quality unused paintbrush (one that wont drop fibres).

I love my computer, so many of my friends live there!

Yes! I got to come in the FRONT door!!! Whee!

Since you are considering an Apple, I say go for it! They are a little odd at first, but the Apple stores have lessons and they will transfer the files from your current dead box into your new unit for FREE! That right there is pretty amazing. Also, there is very little risk of viruses and other malware on a Mac. Might I also suggest a Mac Book? They use less power to run and you can take it with you anywhere you like. Plus, they just feel so good. Also, if you buy one from the Apple store you can have any design you like laser etched on the top. Some of them are absolutely gorgeous! How about wood grain? Or wild flowers? Or a forest scene?

I'm excited already and it's not even for me!

Just don't forget your towel. (You can wrap your new Mac Book in it to keep the dust away!)
