Our resident mushroom expert determined that the weather conditions and time of year were right for embarking on a hunt for Chanterelles.
We embarked forthwith to an undisclosed location.
Go, dig, and keep your mouth shut.
That's the drill.
I was very happy to go on this expedition, because this is a new variety to me and I was anxious to learn about them.
At first we thought we were going to get skunked. But then things got exciting.
Behold, the lovely Chanterelle….
Only a few of them were visible on the surface of the forest floor. Most of them, turns out were hiding. We started looking for little bumps in the duff. And finally we came upon a whole 'field' of them underground. With just the bumps as a clue.
We hit the motherload and brought home a PILE of them….
They are a bear to clean but we managed.
I cooked some in butter for tasting. It took me quite a while to figure out what they remind me of.
Walnuts.
To me, they taste like walnuts.
In the kitchen, as I write this some are being cooked with white wine and cream to be eaten with peas and potatoes. I can hardly wait.
I have so long wanted to learn some good mushrooming skills. It's been on my bucket list for many years.
This was a VERY good day.
PS Just sampled the concoction… divine.
The Mushroom Wild.
