How Does Your Garden Grow?
Tue May 14 2013

My internet connection has been down for a few days due to a damaged modem that happened during one of our recent thunderstorms. Being off line pointed out to me the depth of my addiction to cyberspace. There's no use denying it. We loves the 'series of tubes', * yes we do. I mean, how can we talk to you all if we don't have the tubes open?? I have been doing a LOT of outdoor work these last few weeks. This is what's going on in my garden... The peas are coming right along! Pea pod. That's J.R. in the background. He's a very intelligent horse with an old soul. Garden May 13 1   Garden May 13 6 Planted under the teepees are beans. Two varieties of dry beans. And in the mounds, crookneck squash. Garden May 13 5   The potatoes are popping up in a very satisfactory fashion. I have Yukon Gold, old fashioned Russet Burbank, and Red Norland. Garden May 13 2   In the foreground are two buckets of compost that I am using like it's gold. Which it is. Lovely stuff given to me by Mr. P. In the far corner at the top of that picture is a hill of butternut squash. The black garden fencing sections and colorful tomato cages will be the home of my tomato plants when I have the courage to put them out. I'm pretty sure we are past the frost stage of things. But I'm just waiting a few more days. I also planted a lot of flowers around the edges of the garden. Zinnia, morning glory, nasturtium and marigolds here and there. Also some sunflowers. I still have room for more in the center of the garden, I'm not sure what I will be putting there, but parsley is on the list. I may go to the feed store and stare at the seed racks until something speaks to me. (That may be a long wait Cupcake, seed packets don't talk.) Shows what YOU know. You don't have a gardener's soul. Seed packets DO talk to us. (Okaaaaay.) Damn straight.   *What Senator Ted Stevens called the internet once upon a time.

You are so far ahead of me. We are warm enough for planting now, but no one has had time to get the raised beds ready. I've got kale, spinach, broccoli, swiss chard and lettuce started and ready to set out. All I need is a strong body to turn the soil for me. Then I'll be all set for radish, carrots, beets, green beans, cucumber, green onions and probably a cherry tomato even though shouldn't eat them. But I just can't imagine a summer without tomatoes fresh from the garden. :)

No fun with a wonky internet connection. Total make me crazy, I would be in a frenzy. Love the garden, so jealous. All I have at home in Sacto. is tomatoes. Hope to have lots of tomatoes. I so want to plant a zucchini which I hope to do this week. and maybe a cucumber. Leave Kirkland tomorrow to the lake and then home. Will be in touch.
