Batten Down The Compost
Tue Nov 05 2013

I've been a poor blogger lately. Mea Culpa. I beg your pardon. However, there's been a lot going on around here. Buttoning up for winter everywhere we look. Dad's leaf blower has been put to good use. This is just one area where they have been put to get them off the lawn. WindrowE   Eventually, many of them will end up on the burn pile, but I decided to learn from Mr. P. and make myself a compost row in the garden. I took three large loads of maple and oak leaves and put them in the garden. Then I had to consult with J.R. JR   He gave me permission to gather some of his horse apples. Compost Food     I made a layer of them on my leaf pile... Compost1   Then I watered the whole thing. After that I dug into an already working compost pile and found lots of red wigglers. I put them in next... Compost2   Then I added a layer of greens and kitchen waste, and a layer of garden soil. I covered the whole thing with my leftover mulch from this summer, to keep the whole thing stable [I hope] in the wind. And watered it again. Here's my compost row all finished for now... Compost4   Garden lasagna. We shall see if I have any success. I've been a gardener for a long time, but never really had much luck with compost. But you are never too old to learn something new. I think I can say I am well and truly finished with my outdoor chores. I'm ready for gales and torrents, ice and snow. I even brought all the garden tools up to the shed and put them away. Let the weather begin. (Be careful what you ask for. Remember last winter?) Bring it. I'm ready. (Oh no. She will NEVER learn. The Universe is listening…. )   lime wild

Ooooo, that's gonna be some good garden stuff! And I love that it looks a bit like an oversized grave....'cause it is and it's going to ferment and rot and turn into garden goodness. Pardon me, I think I am hyperventilating just a wee bit......... I do that sometimes when I see something purdy. ;)

Next year you will wish you had made that pile 5 times bigger. I sure did! When I started composting I was shocked at how much kitchen waste could go into the bin. I have the world's fattest worms now. :)
