Today I'm planning the garden.
Everything looks good on paper don't you know...
:-)
We shall see how close I follow the plan.
I went out there and did a walk around. And decided some of my measurements were a bit off, but at least I have a general idea of where to begin.
Mr. P. is having to repair the rototiller. Some mysterious gear is out of whack, so no tilling until that gets sorted.
I've knocked down some weeds with a hoe, hoping they don't get too uppity while I wait for the machine muscles to be available again.
I harvested the carrots that overwintered in the garden and was amazed how well they survived our extremely cold temperatures. I only mulched them a little bit, but it seemed to do the trick. However, I have decided that my 'block' planting idea last year was a disaster in the weeding department, and the carrots were pretty crowded. I remembered a trick I learned years ago, and decided to give it a try again this year.
Homemade seed tape.
You make a paste of flour and water and dip a toothpick or small stick in the paste and pick up a carrot seed with it and place it on toilet paper, spaced the way you want.
Then you put another strip of toilet paper on top of this to cover the seeds.
Then you roll them up and save them for when you are ready to plant.
I have two varieties this year.
You just lay these out, and cover them with a little soil. The paper helps hold a little moisture too which is helpful because the seeds need to stay moist which is kind of hard to do as they are so small and close to the surface.
If all goes well, I won't have to thin at all, and I will have rows that will be easier to weed. . . . I hope. Weeds are very…. determined.
But so am I.
