We worked until seven o'clock last night, and K. got the roof put on.
Good thing too, because last night it clouded up and it was raining this morning when I woke up.
It was starting to get dark when I took that picture.
We still have another day to go, to finish up the roost, nest boxes, chicken door, and a hatch for the screen window. This has turned into a bit more chicken house than I imagined, but I am very happy about it. This structure will stand the test of time, and will be a joy to use. Nothing flimsy about it.
Anything worth doing, is worth doing right! Everyone knows this.
I think you are biased. You have a vested interest in the outcome of this project.
(I heard she has picked out curtains already. And word on the street is, she doesn't really care for that electric lilac color.)
Too bad.
I DO.
We are expecting rain on and off for the rest of the week, so we won't be doing anything more on the construction till then. This is fine by me. I will have time to ruminate on some of the details remaining. Decisions, decisions.
Besides, it will give my thumb time to heal. I was given the simple task of nailing on some of the 'bats' which cover up the gaps between the big boards. I managed to give my thumb a really nice whack. Drew blood. Very exciting. And it turns out that hammering nails is not as easy as you might think. There are a fair number of them that look like this…
But not all of them!
In answer to a couple of questions about it, I won't be painting the coop. It's made of rough cut lumber and would not take paint well. It's just going to age… to gray. Kinda like me. :-)
We also put in a panel of plastic on the roof for a skylight. This isn't a very good picture, but I am going to like this feature a lot in the dark winter months, I'm thinking… and so should the hens.
Hens.
Oh my.
I need hens.
I sorta forgot about hens. You know,….in all the details of construction.
Crikey! I gotta find some hens!
(The term 'dillweed' has never taken on more meaning than today…. wait till she remembers they will need to be fed and watered. . . . and cleaned up after, every single DAY. I can hardly wait to see what will happen when THOSE little facts dawn on her. This is gonna be good.)
