Every Fifteen Minutes...
Thu Apr 24 2014

...the weather changes. We have experienced, at pretty regular intervals, calm, sunny, breezy, blustery, deep dark clouds, rain, blasts of wind, sun with sprinkles, and more foreboding clouds. I've been in and out of the house all morning, getting a few things done in the chicken yard when it's sort of friendly out. After agonizing about how to make a gate to the chicken run…. and I do mean agonizing. Yesterday it dawned on me that I had what I needed right in my storage shed. I just needed to think about it differently. So this morning, I went out and attached two sections of my ornamental fencing together with many zip ties and voila! A nice looking gate! gate   Mr.P found a really nice cedar plank by the barn and since he has, and knows how to USE power tools, made two awesomely strong posts for the gate to be attached to.  I LOVE using things that are on hand! He also cut some little wooden posts to attach to the metal posts because the chicken wire is 6 feet high. We are going to affix it right onto the horse fencing.   posts Sunny's dog pen is going to be much smaller, but she will still have the dry and shady part where she hangs out most of the time anyway. pen   When I am away, and she is in her part of the yard, she will effectively be guarding the chickens somewhat. I'm also hoping that the close proximity will get her used to them being around. One can hope that this might make them so boring, that she won't chase them if given the opportunity one day. (You KNOW what I think about that idea don't you? Come on. Get real. She's a dog. They chase things. It's what they DO.) Well, I'm just sorta hoping. But I'll be careful. I still remember the great chicken massacre (one chicken) that she was involved in with Ben. Though I am willing to put money on the table and wager that it was Ben who did the actual deed. Anyway, things are coming along. Closer every day to actual… um…. chickens coming to live with us. Oh, I wanted to show you my dove painting after I framed it….. Dove frame   If you want to see any of the pictures closer up, just click on them and they open bigger. Anyhoo… this is as close to a real bird as it's gonna get just yet.  :-) lime wild

The gate is marvelous, looks so good. And of course i love the picture of the dove. I think I love everything you paint. I am biased and prejudiced. I like everything you do.

If you can manage it, Quilty Hen recommends digging a little trench along the fence line to bury the bottom edge of the fencing at least 6 inches. We did this to deter predator types, but it is also useful at keeping the little darlings in...... they do so like to scratch and dig out bowls for their afternoon dust baths. Ours are partial to the fence line for this treat and can dig deep enough to allow an adventuresome hen an escape route. The painting is quite charming....... the frame and mat are perfect for it. :)
