Some time ago, a knitting friend handed me a bag of yarn that she wanted to pass on.
[You KNOW who you are!] :-)
It was a LOT of yarn.
Awesome yarn.
Icelandic wool to be exact. A wild and wooly fibre. Technically, it isn't really yarn, it's roving which means there was no twist in it at all. The rovings were thin and pretty delicate, so I decided it had to be held double.
Since there was so much yarn, I knew I could make a BIG bag. I cast on in the Spring. I took this bag with me to every farmer's market and worked on it there. It became a bit of a joke, because it got bigger and bigger…. and bigger, and I just kept on knitting.
The market ended last week, and I finished the bag today.
Here is is just before felting...
It was 24 inches in length. And pretty wide too.
It was kinda scary.
I wasn't sure what was going to happen in the washing machine. I was really hoping it would felt evenly. I have had trouble in the past with roving type yarns being rather unruly in that department. But this one stayed uniform…. but holy cow, did it felt up!
It is now 14 inches long! And very hairy.
I have dubbed it - The Wooly Mammoth.
The actual color of the top band and handles is a rather bright raspberry sherbet color that is not coming out right in these photos… sorry. Sort of hot pink with a little salmon in there somewhere.
It's so big, I bet you could easily put two, maybe three newborn lambs in the thing.
I love it.
I don't know if I will embellish it in any way or leave it as it is. I'll wait till it's dry, which could be DAYS…. [Bruce is helping…] and decide then.
Now that it's finished, I feel like Fall has officially arrived. And just to seal the deal, the rain clouds are moving in.
Perfect timing.
