I forgot to get a photo of the netting Mr. P put up over most of the chicken run...
It's pretty hard to bet a picture of it. The stuff sort of blends in with the scenery.
We are having fine weather, so I spent most of the morning raking sticks and acorns from the lawn in the front of the house. Then I pulled up the crookneck squash plants and two tomato plants. I raked a wheelbarrow full of straw and chicken manure from the run and spread it where the squash plants were and covered that area with my grass hay mulch.
I've been cleaning up the garden this way, in sections.
Many years ago I read a book about no-till gardening and have always been interested in it. This year I have decided to give it a try. I still have a ways to go, to finish up...
Here it is, October 27th and we haven't had a frost! I'm still picking a tomato or two now and then, and the flowers are still quite happy. I'm letting them go to seed, as I would love to have volunteer marigolds again next year. A very welcome plant in the garden.
I'm putting the kale in its winter bunting...
I'm counting on it for some winter greens from time to time.
We'll see how my no till method pans out. I spent far too much time last spring fretting over getting things tilled up, I could have started growing a lot earlier if I hadn't waited for the availability of a tiller. With the addition of chicken poop, and partially decomposed straw, with a layer of fresh grass hay, I'm sort of making a giant compost layer. I am also hoping that the winter rains won't beat the soil to death and compact it so much. That's my theory. We'll see if it holds up come spring.
