I took pictures of the girls this morning all cuddled up in the door of the coop. It's been getting very cold at night here lately and they are SO happy to be able to bask in the sun during the day.
Ms. Amber in the foreground is still struggling to finish out her new feathers. I think that process is being hindered by the fact that she is still laying an egg every other day here in the dead of winter. Miss Lydia is helping out and laying quite large eggs, bless her.
The "chicks" are four months old now and Phoebe is almost as large as the other hens. Goldie is the smallest of all and is taking her time growing up. They actually vary quite a bit in size which is sort of nice. It makes for an interesting flock.
I read up on it a little bit this morning, and 'they' say that my young hens could start to lay sometime between 22 to 28 weeks, so we still have a ways to go. I hope they take their time. Seems like it would be healthier for them to really be mature before they start their work.
Sunny and I ... mostly I, spent some time hauling up three carts of wood to the shed this morning. We are going through quite a bit of wood keeping things cozy here in the house. Though these sunny days help a lot. It streams through my kitchen windows and warms everything up nicely for several hours. It's good to see the days getting longer. Makes me start looking for the seed catalogs in the mailbox.
But that's a whole 'nother story...
