Nest Training
Fri Jul 10 2015

We have been having the most delightful cool and rainy weather right here in our little corner of the world. To be honest, the thunderstorms have not been so polite and well mannered in other areas not far from here. Impromptu raging creeks rushing along downtown streets, and a few mudslides across roads aside, the moisture and cooling have been very welcome. Today I ventured out into the chicken coop to do some cleaning up. I replaced the hay in the nest boxes which often causes consternation among the flock. They don't like change. Unless it involves masses of greens from the garden being dumped in their run. But mess around with their indoor environment, and the get a bit testy. Miss Jane, bless her, has decided she is ready to lay eggs again, now that her daughter is fending for herself the majority of the time. Miss Jane Nest I had to coax Jane into the clean nest, but once in there, she settled right down. The little one is trying to figure out what it's all about. Miss Jane nest2 You can just hear what's going on in her head... "What are we DOING in here???" But after a while, she decides to copy the behavior. Miss Jane nest3 I hope she is taking good notes. By September or so, she should be old enough to start laying eggs of her own. That will be a blessing. Hopefully, she will be our winter layer. We'll see how that plays out. She is certainly learning from the pros.   lime-wild
