Buckcake
Tue Aug 25 2015

As opposed to 'beefcake'.  :-) So, this morning I happened to look out the window that faces the ice pond and there, still as a statue was a special buck that I saw months ago when his antlers were still in thick velvet. He's what we call around these parts a 'forked horn'. That is pronounced fork-ed in case you might be interested. [Futercat comes to mind]  :-) Anyway, I hadn't seen him for a long time, so when he showed up so close by, I got a little excited to get a picture of him. I stepped very quietly onto the back porch and took as many shots as I could. Normally, a forked horn buck is a young one, and their horns are not anywhere near as tall as this.... he looks like a gazelle! [If you click on the photos, they will display a little bigger..]   He pretended for a little bit that I couldn't see him. DSCN7223 DSCN7223     But I knew that wasn't going to last. DSCN7226 And sure enough, the sound of my little camera made him nervous and he took off for the brush and disappeared in seconds. DSCN7227   I'm glad I got to see him again. Even if it was for just a few minutes. He's the handsomest buck in the neighborhood this year.   lime-wild

He is good looking, I'll give him that, but so glad he isn't hanging around up here. I have a couple of local Bambies who have made it their goal to beat me to every piece of fruit in the orchard. They seem to think we planted it just for them.
