A few days ago I decided to open up the wheat 'field' to the chickens, as their run was pretty bare of anything resembling greenery.
It was a good few days for them.
They love green stuff, and this green stuff comes with the added treat of a decomposing grain of wheat attached...
They were VERY busy for about 15 minutes, then I decided to shoo them out and save some for another day.
But they made major inroads in those 15 minutes!
The next day I left the gate open and they pretty much demolished it.
I'm going to try for one more crop. I have some winter wheat berries that theoretically will come up and then overwinter. In the Spring it's supposed to start growing again. I gotta try that!
Now that most of the major outdoor things have been taken care of before winter, I have been spending a little more time with my loom.
I finished up a rather unremarkable blue and purple scarf that has a glaring flaw because of a knot in the yarn right in the middle that I can't seem to 'tuck in' at all, and I'm afraid to trim it any more in case the knot comes undone. I hate it when the manufacturers put a knot in a skein of yarn. It's just not cool.
Anyway, I warped the loom a few days ago with a whole assortment of leftover balls of yarn. After soaking it, I put it in the dryer for a while to lightly felt it. I'm very happy with how it turned out, AND that I used up all those nice balls of good quality yarn, so nothing went to waste.
Weaving is a satisfying art for the frugal at heart.
