Last week, S. hired two very competent men and their awesome machine to come and take out a tree in her yard that had become a problem. They dispatched it most elegantly.
Since they were right in our neighborhood, Mr. P. engaged them to come up here and do some extensive.... dispatching.
The White Oak that lives just outside my front door had two main trunks and one of them leaned toward the house, with many dead and dying branches hanging over my roof. Not only was it dangerous for the roof, but it was a constant source of irritation to me because of all the tons of detritus that would fall off of those branches from Spring to Fall. I really could not use my porch because it needed to be swept every day. And anything that you put there would be covered in a mess.
The men brought this amazing bit of machinery up to the house and commenced their magic.
Here they are on the first day:
Please take a moment to notice the pristine condition of my lawn.
Take just one more moment...
Thank you.
They began cutting limbs from the very top and slowly worked their way down. See how many branches were hanging over the roof?
As it was turning dark, they had gotten this far.... and had to stop for the night.
This is what my front porch looked like...
Oy.
So, they packed up and went away for the long weekend.
We had hauled the branches that they cut down over near the garden and that evening a HERD of deer came and ate every edible bud. There was a feast.
They were still at it the next morning...
This is outside my kitchen window.
Please note the lack of 'pristine'. Sigh.
There was more work to do... the notorious Black Walnut tree had some problematic branches that not only were dangerous, but that shaded my garden pretty badly in the mornings.
The tree guy said he thought this tree was at least 100 years old.
This is what it looks like once they cut it back a bit...
This will be a game changer for the garden this year.
There were other trees that needed dead limbs removed. And by the time they were finished, the yard was full of debris that Mr. P. will be working on with his chain saw for weeks to come. I will also do a bit to help clean up. He wants to do it at this at his leisure. I and my rake will be busy once again.
And because I am easily amused, I just had to go cut this little oddity off the branch and feed it to our Bruce last night...
Hobbit wood at its finest.
So, here's what my house looks like now, sans overhanging oak tree...
And one last oddity...
A few hours after it was cut, this is what the stump looks like... It started out very beautiful and white.
I asked the tree guy what this was.
He said he had never seen it before, and had no idea.
Anyone have an answer?
This pattern was on several of the rounds that were cut of the main trunk.
Anyway, now that the messy part of the tree won't be hanging over my porch. I am searching the internet for a couple of patio chairs. I might actually be able to use my porch this summer.
What a concept.
Brought to us by the competent men and their marvelous machine. :-)
