Something Different

So C. the instigator struck again.

She ran across something in her internet travels and developed a powerful desire for it.

A miniature watercolor sketchbook:

However the shipping was quite prohibitive from the Philippines.

I took a good look at it and thought... 'I think I could make that.'

Because I love her like chocolate, and I also love a good challenge, I proceeded to gather some bookmaking supplies and a stock of watercolor paper and set to.

Here are the folded signatures:

These were all torn from two sheets of 30 by 22 inch Arches watercolor paper.

Here they are ready to sew:

30 pages! I sewed each signature together with thread and made a bundle which is glued with some open weave bookbinding fabric:

Then I glued this block of papers onto a piece of scrap leather that I had on hand and pressed the whole thing using my high end book press: :-)

This is the result:

In the journal making community, this is called a 'chunky monkey'

And it truly is...

I cannot wait to see what she will paint in it. I'm sure at some point there will be something in there having to do with an owl. :-)

Use it in good health C. And it was an honor to fulfill one of your desires!

Is there no end to your amazing talent!? Gardening, water color painting, writing and now book binding and when I first met you knitting was your main creative talent . Now it has blossomed in all directions!
