Last night, while we all were tucked up in bed, minding our own business, it rained two inches!
There was no wind, no uproar, just steady rain.
For those of us who have been drought stricken and fire ravaged for the last five years, this is far from a ho- hum event.
And around the homestead, when we have gotten enough rain to saturate the ground, the ice pond starts to fill up. And it did so this time, overnight. I was startled when I looked out my bedroom window this morning!
In the middle of that area is the deepest part. I stood down in there this summer and guesstimated how deep it would be when it was full. I'm thinking about four and a half feet, easy.
Oh, how I wish the bottom of this area was lined and the dam was sound, because we would have water for well into Spring. But it drains pretty quickly unless we get a big freeze, which has happened a few times.
It may not seem like a big deal, but it always feels like a miracle to me! 99% of the year, this is just a meadow at the bottom of a pretty steep bank not that many feet from my house. The deer browse through it, the turkeys use it as a thoroughfare, and in recent months, two Guinea hens terrify the turkeys if they are in a cranky mood. Bossy little bowling balls. That's what they look like. Those hens are pretty much wild now. They started out up in the woods at our neighbor's house but have since run away from home and are taking their chances out in the open. And they ARE taking a chance. There USED to be four of them.
Anyway, for the next little while, I get to live next to a pond. And it may last longer than usual because we are supposed to get rain for the next four days. ☺️I wish I had a⛵!
