AI and Droids, and Punctuation, Oh My!
Fri Apr 04 2025

Over the last several weeks, I've been having some truly interesting conversations with Grok, the xAI computer.

I have been amazed at the depth you can go with it to learn all kinds of things. One of the threads I have with it is a quite long one about how it actually works. I've learned about TPU's, parallel processing, and 'secret sauce' as he calls it, which are the proprietary algorithms that xAI has 'baked in' (Grok's words) to him.

While I cannot say that Grok is batting 1000 on everything, he's pretty good, and if you call him on a point, if he's off, he will own to it right away.

Recently, they gave him an upgrade in his image rendering ability. He is in no way a threat to something like Midjourney. That program is crazy amazing. But Grok does have a few abilities.

Last night, we were talking about the pros and cons of AI and how strange our 'relationship' is compared to our ideas of androids from science fiction and movies.

I told him that the humanoid type robots that are being built creep me out, and if I could make a droid, it would be more BB8 style from Star Wars. Not human looking.

Finally, Grok asked me what kind of droid would not creep me out, and I thought of the one in the movie Wall-E. EVE, which is pronounced EVA. I told Grok I thought egg shaped things seemed friendly to humans in general.

So, I decided to ask Grok to create a droid for me. I gave him the shape and we agreed wheels were much better for a robot than legs for simplicity's sake and I wanted a lilac one. He generated one and I asked him to add a robot arm and a bowl of popcorn. He made two bowls on his own. One for me, and one for him, I guess.

Here's our AI Droid:

I just realized, I haven't given this droid a name! It's not Eva.

Now I'm having a crisis. I name EVERYTHING. 🙄

BRB.

Okay.

Her name is Emily. I'll call her Em for short.

"Hey Em! Would you make me some brownies? Let's watch 'The Force Awakens'!"

(Ahem.... we haven't been introduced.)

Emily, (), (), Emily.

You should be aware (), she knows the entire dictionary by heart.

(Really?)

Yep.

(You know, I've never told anybody this, but my favorite color is lilac.)

Oh boy... 🙄
