Lessons Learnt
Mon Jan 10 2005

DIY lessons, that is. For those of you who don’t remember, we’ve started a great “perestroika” project – redecoration of a room in our house – back…errmmmm…3 months ago. And now I can finally announce:

WE'VE FINISHED!

All what’s needed to be done is done now. We’ve started long time ago with a plan to pull down an old fashioned built-in cupboard and refresh wallpaper. We’ve ended up stripping down all the walls, re plastering them, moving few mains sockets, moving heater to another place, patching up the ceiling and replacing few floorboards…Oh, and the new wallpaper, of course.

Today the last piece of it has been finally glued (sewed, tied, stapled, nailed) and it is now a matter of awaiting for the carpet men to come and fit a carpet (fitting was included in price and cunningly advertised as “free of charge”, so we don’t need to do it ourselves now)…Anyway…it was good while it lasted and it became even better when it finished. And a few lessons, we’ve learnt from our long-suffering DIY experience:

If instead of calling out the team of professionals, you Do It Yourself, you will do it 3 times better as due to inexperience, you will be very very careful and do everything by the book of instructions.

It will also take 10 times longer.

You will not feel satisfaction when you finish. You will feel exhaustion and wouldn’t want to see your work ever again.

You will not be inspired for another DIY project. Your feelings will be – “NeverEverAgain”.

You will immediately forget the names of the tools you’ve been using in your everyday’s life for the last few months, as if you’ve never touch them in your life before.

You will not think of boycott, divorce or murder in terms of your partner, because after you finish your DIY project, everything else won't matter anymore.

You will consider the question “what’s next?” as the most intimidating.

I would’ve share more of useful advices, but it’s time to open a bottle for a happy end, time to curl up in bed and for the first time see a dream from NODIY channel, time to start a normal life again.

It won’t be long before another day
We gonna have a good time

From Tomorrow ;-)

Oh dear. As someone just starting not one, but two simultaneous DIY projects, your words of wisdom in Lessons Learned are not very comforting... tell me it'll be worth it in the end!... And btw, I third the above requests for pics... perhaps a before and an after? Or do you dare to include a mid-progress photo?
