I promise not to rant for at least a few days. And no whinning either. A two day no whine zone. You have my word on it.
This morning I spent a cozy hour pouring over the seed catalog. January is the traditional time for gardeners to dream up "The most fantastic garden yet".
This will include at least one plant that one has never grown before. I am not sure what the candidate for this year will be yet. I saw some very fine looking black hollyhocks that might make the list. And some blue nasturtiums.
Had no idea such a color existed in the nasturtium world. Lavender eggplants are another idea. We shall see.
I have rather fallen in love with hollyhocks since finally growing a truely fabulous stand of them last summer. Up until then, they had never done well for me. My favorite flowers are morning glories, sweet peas, and sunflowers, with hollyhocks and gladiolus being added to the list these last few years.
Every year, at the end of the garden season I think I am never going to grow so much STUFF again! Especially when I am yanking down the leftover morning glory vines that have wound their way around all the nooks and cranies of the back fence. I HAD to clean them up early this year as my neighbor one day decided they had had enough of their blue beauty and folded all the plant that had grown on their side of the fence over to our side exposing all the vines and hiding the nice second bloom they were enjoying when the weather had cooled down. I guess there is just no pleasing some people !
Anyway, my seed catalog is dog eared and post it noted and highlighted to the max now, and I am going to have to make out the order soon. Don't want to get caught flat footed at the beginning of the growing season without the proper pile of seeds.
But I am making a public announcement here. I will NOT, will NOT I tell you plant 20 tomato plants ever again ! A dozen tomato plants are enough for anyone. Period. We canned and dried and ate and gave away so many tomatoes that it was scary last summer. Well, maybe 14 plants....but NO more than 15... that's the limit.
It takes a real act of faith to buy seeds in January. My green thumb is frozen.
Dormant, but not dead. Storing up energy for "The most fantastic garden yet"
