Robbie remembered it too. We caught him actually “loping” at one point. Anything resembling running is usually very limited in his life these days. But he recognized those waves he used to run into to bring back a stick or ball. He just could not quite do what he wanted to, but he didn’t seem to mind. He enjoyed his morning at the beach.
We watched the surfers dressed in wet suits riding very short waves.
They spent most of their time bobbing in the water like seals waiting for “the big one” that never seemed to arrive. We think they are daft.
Speaking of seals. There was a very large dead one down the beach that looked about the size of a half grown cow. I cannot give you many details, because I could not stand to look at it very much. Oddly enough, it didn’t smell bad considering it’s size. Maybe the salt water has preserved it…?
We are resting up and getting ready for Kol Nidre services tonight.
The beginning of the Yom Kippur fast day. Tomorrow we will spend the day in prayer. No eating or drinking anything at all for the whole day, until 7:30 at night. It’s the no water thing that is hard for me.
Food can wait, but water, well, that’s another story. But we go through it together and give each other strength. To set aside one day a year in this kind of intense inner reflection on our shortcomings seems a small price. The greeting for the evening will be, “May you have an easy fast.”
