Step AWAY From That Television!
Mon Nov 24 2003

I have finished my writing for the day. (Word Count, 40,358) It is cold outside and it’s Sunday afternoon. Hubby went off to put in a water filter system in the kitchen of our synagogue and I am home alone. I thought, oh well, maybe I’ll watch some television.

Bad idea.

Here’s what was on:

A biography of Ann Landers.

A movie about a single mom which two precocious kids. Oh yeah she’s a psychologist who works in a prison. (riiiight).

A show about two guys who like movies, and they film it in their bedroom reading emails that they get from people about movies. Huh?

Some guy slobbering into a microphone, “singing” lyrics that make no sense whatsoever.

A game show for kids where the questions are asked by a giant model of an Inca idol.

A program about going clothes shopping with a gay guy.

An old Burt Reynolds movie.

An espionage movie filmed in a depressing city in December. (there IS no other month in espionage movies.)

A cowboy and indian movie.

A Mel Brooks film. (…..saints preserve us!)

National Lampoon’s Vacation.

Golf.

Home Shopping Network, selling some pink earrings that you CANNOT live without!

Celebrity Home Tour. (I didn’t know the celebrity though…)

Little Women…… Thank God, SOME sanity Marmie!

Football. Kansas City playing someone else…. (does it really matter?)

Oh, here’s a good one, I can buy a counter top cooker to roast a side of beef in. It does everything my oven does except, well you know, it does it on top of the counter. For only 4 easy payments of 39.95 !

A program about people who come and transform your back yard into ShangriLa while you are out getting bread and milk at the corner market.

The Bachelor. (Gag me with a spoon…….quick.)

Some Japanese people swinging on a rope across a mud puddle trying to stick their velcro covered bodies onto a large board.
(I’m NOT making this stuff up!)

Cartoons. (Tom and Jerry)

And finally, last but not least, a Soap Opera. (On Sunday?…. yep, just in case you missed it last week I guess. (Marsha has amnesia…. Again….. I think…..)

I don’t know about you. But I would rather eat a bug than watch these programs. And bugs aren’t even kosher. . .

Well, maybe I’ll watch Little Women. But it’s the one with Susan Sarandon as the Mother. She seems about as maternal as a drill sargent.

Oh well. I think I will bundle up and go outside and play. Or work. Or eat bugs. But I’m NOT going to watch any more Television today….

I love this entry! Thanks for writing it. It definitely makes us all take a second look at the "quality entertainment" that's available to us today!

Thanks for the congrats on my NaNovel. Even today, I can't believe that I finished the 50,000 words! Now I actually have to finish the story. LOL

You're doing a great job with your writing. Keep it up (and keep us posted)!

I'll take Burt Reynolds or Mel Brooks. Yeah, I know he gets kinda raunchy, but he cracks me up.

I noticed the other day that my TV was seriously in need of dusting. Does that tell you anything?

I wouldn't have minded the gardening show so much, in fact I could probably tell you which show that was. I would have gone for Little Women too, which version was it? Kate Hepburn?
I stuck with Fly Away Home today on HBO Family, pretty good. Not so easy to crochet to, I kept watching the screen more than the yarn. No wonder I can't get the darn thing finished!

158 Channels and there's nothing on. That version of Little Women is surprisingly watchable, but I may be biased as it has Gabriel Byrne in it as the handsome, noble yet poor writer who falls in love with Jo (gag!). Wow so you have only 10,000 more words to go? Well done

TV Wasteland. Yuck. It happens a lot more often than I like to believe. But, now that I have Digital Wasteland, when there's nothing else on at least I can watch some show in French and improve my language skills. Ç'est une veritable benediction! See? I learned that on Saturday! :)

You know what else I've noticed? With very few exceptions, people on TV never actually watch TV. They're busy doing other things. Très interessant, n'est-ce pas?

Hey I've watched the velcro show before....at my brother's house. I can't say that I'd watch it ever again but it's absolutely hilarious to watch it in a group. It's the commentators...they're translating what's being said...only I'm fairly sure it's not an accurate translation!!!! The things they come up with....

I LOVE Mel Brooks!!! And I really enjoyed that version of 'Little Women'. I also saw the velcro guys. Interesting culture...I enjoy seeing how different we all are.
Well, I hope you found something interesting to occupy your time.

Happy Thanksgiving to you and everyone who reads this and celebrates it. God Bless.....P~~~
