Andy Rooney & Weed Killer by Music
Tue Feb 10 2004

It's official. That is the goofiest entry title to date for me.

Pardon me for so rudely assuming everyone would know who Andy Rooney is. He is a commentator and author that appears on CBS television. He has written several entertaining books. He is the Curmudgeon Laureate of America. (A title I just bestowed upon him.)

In other news:

So I have this music, see. And it’s in a folder on my desktop. And I open up Windows Media player and set it off to playing the whole list of songs in the folder. It’s a very eclectic assemblage of music.

Right now the opening song from Jesus Christ Superstar is playing. “Don’t you get me wrong.” (pun intended) I’m still Jewish, but I really love that album. Right before that was Celine Dion singing “Love Can Move Mountains” and next will be Donovan’s “Sunshine Superman”, and pretty soon we will have Johnny Mathis singing “And This Is My Beloved” Throw in Kyrie by Mr. Mister and you have a veritable smorgasbord of tunes. Though to be sure, if it was food, I might get indigestion. But somehow in music, it works for me!

It was a lovely day today. It was about 60 degrees out and sunny.
I cleaned up both the raised beds and raked them smooth. I also tied some small metal trellises to the posts in the one bed to tie tomato plants to later. In any event, they are ready for planting. I am thinking about spinach and lettuce and I may get brave and plant some potatoes.
I have to go get some organic ones from the store. They are more likely to sprout. Potatoes are the easiest thing in the world to plant and grow.
I want to get some red ones and Yukon Gold and probably some Russets. If I could get some nice Butte potatoes I would plant those too. But it’s unlikely they will have them in the store. But the plan is to get them planted this week.

And hey get this. I read in the paper a few weeks ago how to make a weed killer to use instead of Roundup. (A substance I have never used and don’t plan to. No offense to those who do…. )
Anyway, I made this stuff and sprayed it on the Bermuda grass that has been trying to get a foothold in our yard since day one. And by golly, after the third spraying the stuff is dying. (Now don’t think I don’t know that the roots are still there and need to be removed) but at least I am letting it know who’s boss!

This spray stuff works REALLY well on broad leaf weeds that are not as persistent as Bermuda.

Here’s what you do. You buy a gallon of white vinegar. Pour it in a big pot and bring it to the boil. Add one cup (8 oz.) of salt and dissolve it in the vinegar. Take it off the heat. Then add about a teaspoon of dishwashing liquid. Let the whole mess cool. (It smells like permanent wave solution) and put some in a spray bottle and go weed hunting.

Like I said, it took three times for the Bermuda grass, but I zapped a few broad leaf weeds and they croaked that day. Anyway, I would be careful not to get it on any of your good plants, but it sure isn’t going to be a danger to anything but the weeds. I don’t think the dogs or cats will like the smell…. Which might be useful, come to think of it, but it shouldn’t hurt them.

With that I will close. Da Vinci’s Notebook is now singing, “Title of the Song” If you have never heard them, see if you can find a clip on the internet. They crack me up. The funniest song they do that I have heard is called “The Gates” about Bill Gates.

Glad you are back on the ground daughter.
You were brought up on MUSIC and it was so much a part of life, I tried to watch the Globe awards last night as I love music much but quit after 15 Min. I crave for the the stand up songs you can actual hear the words and not drink them in .
To much flash and show ,wild settings ect. I want Jhonny,Frank, Barbaha, and all the great singers
that just stand up and sing.
I guess I shall have to get me a CD player as tapes are hard to find so I can just adsorb the music .

Great lineup of music. With the amount of salt in the mixture, I'm surprised it doesn't kill everything it touches!
How long did it take after your first application before you noticed the weeds dying off?

Last time I checked, Jesus was Jewish too. No reason you shouldn't like the music.

I think I mentioned before that I'm madly in love with Andy Rooney! Curmudgeon Laureate! Yeah! Title suits him, and I think it's well earned.

Isn't it nice to have some nice days??

Oh, I'll put you on the list for apprenticeship in eccentric. As I said, you're not quite old enough yet to start training, but you might start observing and taking notes.

LOL @ Praggie's comment! Ok, so if you are HER apprentice in the fine art of Eccentricism, can I be yours a couple years later? I'm already a prime candidate for it, and just starting to be peri-menopausal.

*wink* "Bad Bad Leroy Brown" by Jim Croce playing on the computer right now.

Oh gosh you're driving me crazy being able to plant things!! I copied the weed killer recipe, if nothing else it is cheaper than Roundup and I'm all for that.

"The Fields Have Turned Brown" by Ralph Stanley - Just let me harmonize and I'm happy.

That music pot pourri sounds very satisfying.
Coincidentally I just bought a cheap CD of Sunshine Superman! I'm half on the lookout for Season of the Witch. Thanks for explaining who Andy Rooney is. I love his title ;)
