Garden Diary
Wed Feb 11 2004

I may regret it later, but I am planting some things in the garden. It might be a bit early, but for the last 3 years I realized that I could have done it and gotten a lot more out of the garden than I have been.

So, I have plantedPotatoesThree different kinds.Yukon Goldand a Red Potatoand some kind of Bluepotato that I don't know the name of. I bought them in a little mixed bag at Trader Joes.

Then I decided to plant some edible podPeasin the bed that will eventually hold the tomato plants. But even I know it is too soon to plant tomatoes!

I have a collection of seeds from a few years past. And there are times that I have this whacky idea of working up a bed to plant them in and emptying out the packages into a bowl and stirring them around and planting them all mixed up and see what happens. Butternut squash and Batchelor Buttons, Zinnias and zucchini, Gourds and Gazanias, Lettuce and Larkspur. What the heck? It would be the ultimate Cottage Garden look.

I did do that with some leftover flower seeds last year and had a pretty wild 8 foot bed of Cosmos, Poppies, Marigolds, Calendulas, Sweet William, and Sunflowers. The Poppies won the reseeding race. They are growing thick as grass right now and will need to be thinned. And the Sweet William came in second. I am looking forward to seeing them bloom.

I re-wrote another chapter in my book today. I actually liked it. Surprise! That makes 10 chapters finished for now. They are rather short ones and later I might combine a few of them, but it makes for easier editing to have them in a managable size.

In reading the Lord of the Rings, I am up to the place where Frodo and friends have arrived in Bree and Frodo is having a conversation with Strider. And although I found Frodo being shaped by Tolkien and not looking like the character in the movies, Strider is another thing altogether. I think he fits the part so well that he will stay in my minds eye.

Well, that's about the size of it here today. I'm going to go outside now and wait for the peas and potatoes to poke their heads out of the ground. I want to be there to say hello.

I am already doing the same thing, I have some orange bell peppers sprouting their way through the soil and some pretty sunflowers about 1/4th of an inch tall already.

Would like to plant some sweet peas for my daughter and more sunflowers and daisies.

I should have been doing this years ago instead of waiting until the last minute then rushing everyone to grow :)

    Good luck with your garden,

As strange as it sounds, I feel as if Jackson simply didn't have enough time in the movies to fully develop Frodo's character. I loved the movies, but I'm glad I read the books first so that they shaped my vision of Middle Earth.

I think the blue potatoes were originally from Peru. Seems I read something about them in a National Geographic article on the ancient Inca civilization.

I'm gonna come by one of these days and say hello to your garden. And maybe whine a bit.

    Shalom

OK, I can dig Bermuda grass. But could I have a little sympathy that I'm digging YOUR Bermuda instead of MINE????

Hmmm. That doesn't sound quite like what I mean to imply, but you grok?

I wanna plant stuff! I'm not brave enough though to put anything but cold weather friendly seeds into the ground at this point!

Please be sure to post pictures of your garden when it's all blooming with these flowers. I have to agree. Strider was played so excellently by Viggo Mortensen. In my opinion he was the only one who *really* fits my minds eye picture in the book. ;-)
