I Smell Bread Baking
Thu Feb 12 2004

Here I am composing in the DD HTML box, risking all because I know I this will be a short entry.

Let us hope the CyberFairy is not overtaken by the CyberTroll and I get it off without a glitch.

I have been spending the day at my neighbor D's house. She is learning to bake bread. We made a simple french bread and formed it into three different shapes. It is cooling on her counter right now. It was a lot of fun.

Someone gave her a dry sourdough starter and we got that going too. It was sitting in the sun last I saw it, bubbling slowly, doing it's secret sourdough thing.

She is a fantastic gourmet cook, but has never delved into the mysteries of bread baking. Me I am not such a great cook, but bread.... I know bread.

We have exotic experiments planned. It will be fun to see how she takes to it.
I am sure soon she will be putting her own special touch on her loaves.

Oh yes, she gave me some fingerling potatoes that she had in her pantry that were starting to sprout. I have planted them in the potato bed. They are so cute! Little miniature reddish potatoes. So now we have 4 kinds planted!

The potatoes sound fab. Bread making can be so enjoyable. I saw a loaf before Super Bowl Sunday that was shaped like a football, and had rye bread to make the lacing on it. It was really cute and would have made a good sub sandwich if you had a bunch of people over for the game (debacle and spectacle that it turned out to be!).

    Anyway, enjoy!

If you really like the rain who am I to argue? I quite like the rain actually, living in Scotland I couldn't help but make my peace with it years ago.

    Bread baking sounds relaxing

Oh, I dunno about that. From what I've sampled, your cooking is pretty darned good too.

You share your breadmaking expertise, she shares her gourmet expertise. Sounds like a pretty nice neighborship to me.

My secret dream is to own a yarn/bread store. Not much of a mix there, but my goodness I love to bake bread too. I'd have a lot to learn before I could make a go of it, but it's fun to dream.

I can only bake those Pillbury rolls that come in resealable packages. And half the times I BURN it. Is it really baking if all you are doing is sticking whole things in the oven?

I think that smell is probably one of the best aromas in the world. ;-)

I hate being at the mercy of yeast. Those little buggers have minds of their own, and will perversely refuse to grow one time while exuberantly over-reproducing the next. I figure it's their own little protest at the prospect of imminently being cooked alive.
