Tomatoes and Dogs on Probation
Thu Jun 19 2008

Now let me make it clear that I am not putting this picture on here 404Error, to gloat in any insensitive way over your unfortunate tomato situation this year. But I made an extra special effort this year to put my plants in as soon as possible to avoid the heat. It may well be working. Though time will tell. Here's the first one that's ripening:

In other garden news, I have been watching my brussels sprouts forming nicely on the plants and then being covered just as nicely by aphids. I don't like to spray my vegetables with pesticides, so I decided to see what would happen if I just sprayed those sprouts with water. And by golly, it worked! I have done it twice now and the aphids have been knocked back by 90%. I highly recommend it.

Little Belle [ I have knicknamed her 'Jelly Belly'] is settling in pretty well. My fostering friends tell me that I won't know for SURE if she isn't a bad barker for at least two weeks.

I wonder if she knows she is on probation?

She doesn't LOOK like she knows....

Hmmm...Probabtion? No, I don't think she has a glimmering. *grin*

Ooooh, that's pretty tomato. As for the brussels sprouts, I say let the aphids have 'em.

    Bless

Beautiful looking tomatoes and Belle (Jelly Belly) seems to be a good dog at the moment herself. Love the breed and hope she works out for you. What a wonderful diary you have as well.

NO she doesn't look like she knows, ha! She is very pretty tho. I have tried salt on veggies to de-bug, it is pretty effective. ((HUGS))

It's OK, feel free to post as many garden/tomato photos as you'd like. At least someone has some. I suspect I'll be buying mine from the little old lady in the next town that grows early girls for the next couple of months. Oh well.

Last year I had my first ripe tomato the week after Mother's Day. This year, I'll be lucky if it the first week of August. I can't have an early garden every year, I suppose. Next year, I'll start in January.

I got my tomatoes in early this year and it hasn't done me a darned bit of good because the weather has done some extremely funky things here since late April. The result is that I have plants that are shorter than that cute little doggy, laboring under a burden of fruit.

Mother Nature appears to hate me this year *sigh*
