A Little Chat
Tue Dec 23 2008

I'm going to make a confession.

And the only reason I'm doing it is that I haven't seen beak or feather of Little Red Hen today, so I feel like we can have a little chat, just between us.

So here's the thing....

Three dogs is a lotta dogs.

It's officially what I would consider a BUNCH of dogs. Kinda like you could call three carrots a bunch of carrots, but if you only had two carrots, that would just be a pair or a couple-a carrots.

I find that it is hard to please everyone at once. Some dog is always feeling left out. I try to make it up to them here and there. Sunny gets more secret bites of food, Ben more whispers in the ear telling him he's a good dog, and Bandit, the middle pup, gets this....

Sorry for the blur, I didn't want to use the flash, it needs adjusting so the silly autofocus doesn't want to work right without it....

Anyway, it is a big challenge, and commitment to have so many of them in the house. And now Fiona and Bandit have started playing tag. Fiona started it. It is easy to forget Fiona in the mix because she is more self-reliant. But when she DOES enter the fray.... well, my eyes glaze over and all beasties with fur between their toes have to go outside for a while!

Speaking of which, it is time to take the dogs to the playground. It's pretty cool, we have it all to ourselves for the two weeks of Christmas vacation. Other times we have to go very late in the day or only on weekends.

I need to go let the bunch of carrots air themselves out and use up some energy. All I want to do is sit down and knit in peace. But that won't happen till the sun goes down, I can tell.

Because......

Three dogs is a lotta dogs.

You're absolutely right. Three dogs IS a lotta dogs. A small pack, even.

Take comfort in the thought that at least they aren't Saint Bernards.

And here I'd been planning on adding another dog *rolls eyes*. The Radar adoption fell through because the rescue group wasn't wholly honest with me about some of his "issues".

While my dogs get along very, very well, they still are convinced that someone else is getting what they need/deserve. There's a lot of paw pointing that goes on around here.

I'd love to put my dogs out for a little airing right now but it's 32 degrees and raining. I personally don't care for ice drizzled pups.....

RYC: The hair. I wash it, dry it, throw in some goo to make it 'chunky' and call it good. It takes, seriously, 5 minutes at most. I just love that part.

That's Bandit snuggling with who? Not you. Where are your curls?

You would just as well have a houseful of teenagers. It's funny that Fiona starts the game of tag.

Where's the Hen? Off visiting Quilty?

    Bless

Yep I'm sure it is but just think of all the wonderful things you are dong for them! You are truly an angel! God Bless You for your work with the animals! There was a white Pom on the news tonight near here in a shelter. I don't know if it was a boy or girl, I tried to talk Ted into it, but he said one dog like Riley was enough for us! Perhaps he is right but I want to save them all! (( Christmas hugs)))

And now it's snowing and outside time is very limited.

Three dogs is a lot. Sometimes one dog is a lot. I'll bet you'll adapt and keep everyone happy, even the cat. Maybe not the hen though, that's impossible even on the best of days.

Recreational bones (a.k.a. raw soup bones/knuckle bone/shank/etc.) and crates. Set aside an hour or so each day in which the dogs are crated with a bone to chew to their hearts content.

You get an hour or so of quiet time, the dogs get an hour or so of one-on-one time with their concept of heaven.

Take the bones up at the end of chew time, put it in a ziplock bag and into the freezer until the next day. If you use shank/marrow bones, once the dogs have cleaned out all the marrow, fill that space with peanut butter, and freeze it for the next day.

The bones MUST be RAW. Cooked bones will splinter. When I did this with my Danes, one bone lasted a week to 10 days depending on the type of bone I used. Two giant sized crates took up a LOT of room, but crating them kept the peace and let me get work done that the dogs otherwise tried to "help" me with. Afterwards they usually took a nap. Apparently chewing on a bone with such intensity is very tiring for a dog.

Good for their teeth too! My dogs never had tartar build up while I did this.

Three dogs and a cat are a lot of playful ones in the house! Our four cats who we love dearly also can drive us up a wall. They are more self-reliant, however they also want a whole lot of attention! Meiling and Riley chase each other from floor to floor, flying up and down the stairs. Tha usually happens around 4 AM! You are a special breed my dear.
