Yesterday I got home in the late afternoon.
When I walked in the front door I was surprised that the dogs were not there to greet me. I wandered out into the back yard to find Sunny who managed to lick me no matter how quick I tried to get away from her tongue. She has the fastest tongue in the West.... I called to Ben and saw part of him sticking out from behind the patio table. He was busy with something.
Turns out the something was a big fat Vole, a rather largish field mouse that lives in these parts. He was tossing its limp body around in his mouth, repositioning it again and again. I called to him and tried to distract him long enough to get him to drop it and say hello to me. But the closer I got, the more he decided he wanted Mr. Vole. I grabbed the back of Ben's neck to see if I could loosen his hold on the critter, and that did it. Ben flipped him one more time for good position, and down the gullet he went.

Eeewwwww! THEN Ben decided he wanted to get VERY excited that I was home and jumped all over me and generally made a clown of himself, but I was just so grossed out at what he had just done, he was getting no kisses or hugs from ME! No sireee bob.
I fully expected to see Mr. Vole again all that evening. But somehow Ben managed to keep him down. OY. At least I know that Ben could take care of himself in the wild if it ever came to that. Ben the mighty Vole hunter...
