Abe Lincoln Would Be So Proud... I Think
Wed Jan 14 2009

Last night I hauled myself out to our monthly knitting guild class. I am toying with a little head cold and felt kind of .... muddled, but I went anyway. I wanted to learn how to make a log cabin square.

The one on the left is the one I did in the class:

The other one I am working on today. I realize now that it looks like a pumpkin, but hey, I was using up odd balls of yarn okay?

(Well you succeeded. It looks odd ball alright.)

I admit to being quite color challenged. It's a fact. If I had been thinking clearly, I would have taken my camera to get a picture of the one the teacher of the class had made... It was gray and maroon and blue and mustard. The thing just knocked your socks off when you looked at it. But who would think to use those colors together???

Ack. I have things to learn.

Many, many things.

    What's wrong with pumpkins?

I'd like to watch how you go around corners, or however it is you go from vertical to horizontal. Are you planning to make "something" with those squares?

    Bless

All you need is a color wheel. I'm sure you can get a good, cheap one at Michael's. Personally, I tend to stick to monochromatic color schemes. Either that, or schemes that are next door neighbors on the wheel, like citrus colors. It might be sort of boring to do it that way, but as long as you consider color values and shades you can't really go wrong and end up with a clashing, train wreck of a project.

My grandmother made a quilt for my mother years ago in the log cabin square. Right pretty it was.

Those are very nice! And yes, the one is very much fall colors but why not have them be seasonal? You can change them around when the spirit moves you.

Log Cabin blocks are very versitile especially when the value placement is split on the diagonal. Ummm, maybe I ought to explain that better. If you knit the two smaller bars in light and the two larger bars in dark you will end up with somewhat of a diagonal line. This gives you several wonderful setting options.

The lovely thing is it is a great way to use up all the odds and ends as neither the two lights or two darks have to match..... just be in the same color group.

As to color.... my favorite book on the subject is 'Color Play' by Joen Wolfrom. She does a great job of taking the mystery out of the various color schemes. There is a fairly decent color wheel printed in the front which is very helpful.

Deb they both are just beautiful. I love that pattern but am so afraid I'll wimp out before it gets big enough to use. Are you going to make a full afghan or just playing around? You're a better knitter than me if you go for the whole thing. Wow!
