Yard Art Extraordinaire
Fri May 21 2010

When I was up North, I was lucky enough to be able to admire the following bit of yard art.

It was made for my friend S. by a neighbor up the road from her.

I simply adore it. It's about 3 feet tall I'm thinking. It knocked my socks off. And I wasn't even wearing any socks.

Behold:

The Big Shroom. Sweet eh?

I wonder what my Homeowner's Association would think of this thing if it were in MY front yard? Next time we buy a house, God willing, it will not be attached to any associations except perhaps the 'cool neighbor's association' types who carve giant shrooms for you to put in your back yard and admire every single day.

This I could live with.

I WANT ONE. Right now *stomps feet*.

ummmmmmm I think I just had a hissy fit over an artificial mushroom. That works for me in some kind of strange way.

RYC: Yes, the Stinkwood Mushroom smells fantastic to canines since the fragrance is much like rotten dead mammals. A great thing to roll in. At this point we don't think he ate it, we suspect that the blob-o-slime on his ear wasn't Maggie spit but slime from the fungus that was then absorbed into his system. If he'd eaten it he'd have been a goner for sure.

Trust me when I say this dog has more lives than the average cat.

If not your front yard, then surely your back yard is sacrosanct. Surely the "association" doesn't come around with camera and clipboard examining your back yard. Your private back yard.

    What's next? Your closets?

I'd be happy to plant a shroom like that on my patio, and the manager can go pester someone else.

    Bless

I've seen a lot of carved bears from logs and, while they are ok, they never have appealed to me all that much. The mushroom has an entirely different appeal. I like it. And I think you should have one.......even if you have to hide it from the yard art police. I promise I won't turn you in. :)

Back when I was house-hunting, I drove by a listing in a neighborhood I was particularly fond of and couldn't help but notice that the next-door neighbors had painted their typical, standard, cement-block wall with a mural featuring a spaceship and two friendly-looking aliens. I wasn't impressed enough with the house for sale to schedule an appointment to go inside, but I really, really liked the neighbors...

Not only is it a giant mushroom, but it's a morel!!! While I don't particularly enjoy eating them, as a former chef I can certainly appreciate their culinary prestige.
