Beds To Bed
Fri Oct 08 2010

This morning I cleaned out the other raised bed in the garden. I can't decide whether to plant something in the small one and call it a winter garden or just sow some more clover.

I'm thinking, I'm thinking.

It takes strong gardener's fortitude to think about planting at this time of year. One is emotionally exhausted by the entire enterprise by now. The one thing that causes a small spark to ignite in my green thumb is the thought of determinate tomato seed hunting on the internet.

Anything more taxing causes me to swoon with my hand to my forehead like a southern belle in August.

You'll be happy to know the dogs are still alive. And Hub Man and I have a plan to thwart their canine assaults.

First on MY list is to put them both in the garage if I am only going to be away for a couple of hours.

Write that down.

(Is this a trend? Writing stuff down? If so, I'm going to need more paper. And while you're at it, I could use a nice fountain pen. Broad nib if you please. Black ink. None of that foo foo lavender stuff you favor.)

I'll get right on it....

It's been a week of ups and downs around here. I feel a little 'run over' by modern life just now. It's cookie baking day which is a blessing. Only thing is, I think I need something stronger than cookies. I need some straight up, full strength, count no calories, brownies .... with frosting. No little round cookie morsels are going to cut it. I need some serious fork time with some serious chocolate.

Write that down.

What about doing a salad garden in the small bed for the winter? Lettuce, spinach, green onions/chives, raddishes and carrots?

What else would grow in the winter climate you have there?

I can think of one more thing that grows well here in winter, PEAS!!! They like the cool temps and gray weather with just enough sun to suck the life out of for growth. Rhubarb, too! It likes the winter weather. I suppose celery would like it just as much as rhubarb. That sounds like soup mix for the dehydrator: carrots, onions, celery, peas and spinach, doesn't it? I can almost smell it now.
