In Defense of Brussels Sprouts
Thu Jan 20 2011

I'm not sure when it actually happened.

But at some point in my adult life, I acquired a taste for brussels sprouts.

It was quite the surprise let me tell you.

I think I can say with complete confidence, that now they are my most favoritest vegetable.

However, there are two caveats.

1. I only buy fresh brussels sprouts.

2. You absolutely cannot overcook them.

I admit, the quality of taste does vary according to the growing conditions. But overall, I just love them to bits. Everyone has a vegetable that they think is disgusting. I personally cannot abide raw onions. But cook those pungent puppies and I'm all over 'em.

Anyone want to discuss Cilantro?

[GAK!]

I read somewhere that this is one of those herbs you either adore or despise. Put me in the despise column thank you very much.

(The title says in defense of brussels sprouts, let's stay on topic.)

Don't get me started on punctuation....I could write volumes.

And in answer to one question.... the purple bits in the roast lunch are blue potatoes. Bought them at Trader Joe's in a little bag of three potato varieties. Highly recommend them.

If Brussel sprouts taste like dirty sneaker, cilantro tastes like soap.

Somehow you managed to hit the only two "edible" things I can't do. I'm glad we agree on one of them!

I LOVE cilantro! However, I hate the seeds (coriander) that it grows from. Go figure. I didn't always love cilantro, though. It was an acquired taste for me.

The foods I can't abide are turnips, parsnips, rutabagas and radishes. I ate a few pieces of radish recently and, while I can't say I enjoyed it, I didn't spit it out, either. So perhaps there's hope for me to stop picking them out of things. Also, I don't eat catfish because they usually taste like mud.

I'm on the fence with cilantro. A little bit goes a loooooooong way with me, but then there are times when it hits my tongue and I scream...YUK,POO,SPIT. Go figure.
    Love the blue taters, tool

I love brussels sprouts but you're right in that if they are over-cooked they are one of the most disgusting things on the planet. They get mushy and taste like I'd imagine dirty socks might.

I love cilantro but like 404 said I think it's an acquired taste. A little bit of it goes a very long way, too. Having said that I'll admit to not liking mint AT ALL. It literally turns my stomach though for most people it's a tummy soother. Go figure.

Also like 404 I detest catfish. It does taste like dirt.

Brussels Sprouts I can live with if cooked right. Our kids both never liked them ,our son would roll them around and go spit them outon the sly. Now Catfish it depends on the type and how they are cooked are very tasty.

I CRAVE Brussels Sprouts. I love to saute fresh sprouts cut in half with a little butter and olive oil until they turn a little brown. Add some salt and pepper and I could eat a whole pan full. The other night I added come diced red onions to the saute and I was in heaven. BTW...I adore Cilantro, too! Now I'm hungry and it's too late to go to the store.
