Pea Sized Expedition
Thu Jun 02 2011

Yesterday it was threatening thunderstorms. An astonishing development weatherwise for our area at this time of the year. Usually we are well into the brain boiling heat by now, but lucky for me, we aren’t. Can’t imagine this cast on a hot day okay???

I made an expedition out into the back yard. There was an urgent situation that required action on my part.

These were ready to pick:

The second and last picking of the year. I took a basket out, along with my cell phone in case I fell over anywhere near dog poop and couldn’t get up.

Here’s the haul, along with my gimp sticks.

Nearby the tomatoes are actually growing, surprise, surprise. I guess they don’t mind a little cool weather at this stage of the game.

Yes Virginia, there are weeds.

I hoed them after taking this picture.

I didn’t fall over into any dog poop either.

Score!

Then as nice as you please, a few hours later we got a soaking rain that watered the whole place down.

Perfect.

The dogs and I have been enjoying the peas ever since.

And it helps one sleep soundly at night knowing that one has hoed the weeds in one’s tomato patch.

(One is a Dillweed. One should have made the dogs do it.)

One wanted to do it oneself.

(One is still a Dillweed.)

I'm jealous of your peas! I didn't plant any this spring. However, I do have a couple of two-inch long yellow squashes! I'm so excited to have squash this year. It's planted in a five-gallon bucket on the patio, we'll see how that works out. My tomatoes have a few blooms and the one that is planted in a bucket is bigger and has more blossoms than the ones in the ground. I expect that's because the concrete patio retains what little heat we've had and keeps the roots warmer. We'll see how that goes, too.

And pretty peas they are, indeed!

It's spiking into the 90s here and my friend, P, has a cast on her hand. Her favorite pass time right now is starting her car and aiming the air vents up her cast. Can't say I blame her at all, at all.

I'm not convinced I'm going to get a garden in this year because it's been so miserably wet. Last year it was too flippin hot and everything withered on the vine no matter how much I watered. The year before it stayed too cool for anything to produce. I'm at the point of throwing up my hands (not to mention the contents of my stomach) over it.

Good for you getting out to the yard. And being so productive to boot! Yay! :)

I wish I had put in peas. By the time I had a garden space I thought it was too late. Who knew this spring was going to stay so cool.....I'd have had plenty of growing time. Oh well, maybe next year.

There's nothing quite like fresh-picked peas! I need to re-plant as the ones I planted seem to have fallen victim to either birds or the hard freeze we had right after I planted them.

RYC: "shoe in"...*giggles madly*. I do actually buy my work boots in the little boys department so I don't know why it hadn't dawned on me to try to find sandles there. Granted, they aren't very pretty but they're quite servicable.
