Grow
Thu May 30 2013

While walking in the woods today, I came across an alder tree that was trying really hard to grow in a place that I'm afraid is a bit too shady for it. The thin trunk was leaning over into the path and at eye level, this is what I saw…. Ecosystem A mini ecosystem of moss, lichen and new leaves from the tree. It's amazing to me how plants, animals, people, and  I imagine, minerals in dark caves try so hard to grow. Even when conditions are not optimal. Hell, conditions may be downright hostile. And yet we try. There's a lesson in there somewhere….

There is a lesson there. Life will always continue. No matter what.

It is not uncommon around here to see moss covered trees, but along Cornelius Pass Road the trees take it to a whole new level. The road runs through a ravine with a creek at the bottom so it is damp most of the year and the lower levels get little in the way of sun. Along this stretch the moss is especially lush and the leaves in the lower branches are few, but when you look up you see that almost every tree has small ferns growing in the moss. Fascinating and beautiful........ in a Mirkwood Forrest kind of way. ;)
