Mr. S. delivered the ladies this morning.
We are all aflutter.
I decided to keep them in the coop today. I don't want to be chasing chickens this evening to show them where they need to spend the night.
Here they are getting used to their new space.
It will most likely never be this clean again. :-)
These are Brahma chickens. A fairly heavy breed.
Two light, and two golden laced.
The one with the black head and tail feathers Mr. S tells me is a Columbian pattern.
The white hen seems to be the most comfortable. She ate first, went over and pecked the wooden egg in the nest, just to show it who's in charge, and I hope she will be the first to figure out the watering situation, because they aren't used to that kind of contraption.
These girls have been sort of roughed up by a rooster who has taken his job very seriously lately. I watched him in action a few weeks ago. He likes to pluck out a neck feather on the hens just to make a point. Their feathers will grow back in now that they don't have to deal with him any more. Though in the spirit of fairness, you can't get new baby chicks without that rooster, so we won't speak ill of him any more.
Also, the white hen seems to have waltzed under one of the cars out at the old homestead and got oil on her back.
Mr. S told me that these hens had sort of separated themselves from the rest of his flock for some reason, and were roaming around in the yard by the house. So they REALLY got their wish, and left the rest of the flock behind. I hope they don't regret that decision! :-)
They are all just under one year old.
I kept Sunny in the house while we were moving the chickens in. But when they were safe in their house, I let her outside and she heard chickens murmuring in the coop, she was VERY interested in checking that out. I'm pretty nervous about this. I am going to have to keep my wits about me for some time with her. I wish I could trust her, but I don't.
We may need to put in a request for some hen guardian angels. They may need them.
I'm trying real hard not to go out there and stare at them, because I sort of make them nervous right now.
I hope we will be friends soon.
They look like very respectable chickens.
I think I'll go introduce myself.
I have some things to say about that brutish rooster too!
Should I take wheat or oats in the welcome basket?
Oats I think. I saw them picking them out of the rest of the food in the bowl.
(Can we talk about something else now?)
Don't hold your breath ( ). The adventure has just begun.
(Oh gawd.)
