Yesterday was big creek day.
This time I left Sunny at home to watch over [ha!] the chickens. I still don't trust her one little bit with them. I put a little lock on the chicken gate when she is in her pen and I am away. Just in case...
Anyway, it was lovely up there as usual.
My leaf line is still up.
Though it has gotten tangled with a tree branch on the other side.
And it must be the season for them… because right near my sitting spot there was a...
This one was much more accessible, so I could really get a close up of it.
Those anthers [I found out what they were called] look like little fuzzy ballerina shoes!
I wandered around looking for rocks to balance.
I noticed that some of my earlier ones were still standing, but missing a top rock or something.
I started with this...
It's very interesting how… I was going to say easy, but it's not really … but how tiny an area is necessary to balance a rock. A little spot less than a half an inch is all that's touching.
But if you an find that spot and it has three points that touch, you have yourself a pretty steady balance.
They WILL balance with two points, but watch out, because it's gonna fall over real soon. AND you won't be able to put any other stones on top of a two point balance.
Then I found a really odd shaped rock...
And added another one to it...
By the way, those plants with the giant leaves on the other side of the creek are Indian Rhubarb.
I walked further down the creek and spotted a rock that was unlike all the others. It was pretty big, and VERY heavy. I had to be so careful working with it. It took a lot of shoving and maneuvering and resting in between to even get it to the top of the other rock. And balancing it took quite a while as I had to position myself so that if it fell off, it didn't fall on ME!
But at last I worked it out.
I think this is about the limit of the SIZE of rock I can work with safely.
Then I wanted to try something again that I've failed at so far.
My first true counterbalance….
This was a lot of fun. There are times you think… "This is never going to work." But you are wrong. :-)
It's good to be wrong sometimes.
Very good.
And finally, I wanted to share this photo...
I changed the exposure setting on my camera and took this shot looking up the creek. [That's my hoodie on the rocks a ways up] Anyway, because of the exposure, it looks like we are looking at the entrance of a huge cave. It was a surprising effect that I really like… totally not by design.
