I have been a terrible blogger lately.
There's just been so much going on that I haven't been settled enough in 'me brainpan' to sit down and write.
But today there's a little story to tell...
While our Miss Jane is putting all her energy into growing her new feathers:
And doing a grand job of it by the looks of it...
Miss Lydia has decided it's her turn to go broody.
Yes my friends, broody.
Here she is after about five days.
This time I was ready. I put in a call to the school friend who sold me my chickens in the first place and asked him if he had some fertile eggs. He told me he had a hen who was sitting on a nest right now and I could have six. I toodled out there a little while ago and collected them. He thinks they are about a week old already. More or less.
In the chicken world, this is the equivalent of a sonogram. :-)
Here's Lydia tucking one under her:
I had to scoot the rest of them under her feathers myself. I hope this isn't an indication of her parenting abilities.
So, we are now on chick watch. We may or may not get a hatchling. The eggs aren't guaranteed fertile like the ones you buy from hatcheries, so we are taking our chances.
I had a talk with Lydia before I left the coop. I told her I hoped that she was prepared to be a mother, because she was now in charge of those eggs. No fooling around. Going broody is not just some fashionable and trendy thing around here.
We'll see what happens. Let's hope we get at least one chick, thus ending the broody phase. Then we can move on into fall with a little more egg production and a little less "I'm broody and I can't lay eggs right now." around here.
I find your lack of compassion disturbing.
Whatever.
