Garden Surveying and Pond Trivia
Wed Mar 05 2025

The weather has dried up a bit here which gave me the opportunity to putter around outside this morning in the sunshine.

I decided to take some pictures of my garden in the 'before' state to compare how it looks later in the Spring and Summer. Also, I'm going to print out the photos and use them for planning what I'm going to do. My little Sukkah is in need of a complete overhaul. Last year I shored it up nicely, and it weathered the winter storms just fine. But now it needs all new willows on top and the wood framing needs replacing.

Here's the garden right now:

The good news is it's not full of weeds or crazy chaos. But I want to change some things around a bit and maybe, if I can find what I want, add a couple more raised beds, though smaller ones. I'm still thinking it over.

While I was outdoors, I went down into the now dry ice pond. I got curious about how deep it is at the lowest point. So, I ran some twine along from the high-water mark across it to see.

It looks deceptively shallow from this photo. But when I walked down there to the lowest point, that twine was about two or three inches above my head. So, it can get 5 feet and 4 inches deep! That makes me even MORE cautious about ever going out there when it's frozen over. No thank you!

I also found an old pipe that I think must have been used to fill the pond. Up at the top of the pond there are actually old water works manholes believe it or not, that must have been hooked into the city water line that comes from the creek up the road. But those lines have been changed over the years and are no longer available. Wouldn't THAT be something, to be able to keep it full?! Ducks and fish all year round! Oh well. It's not to be.

But I have to admit, I'm very fond of it when it DOES fill up. There's something very energizing about it. I miss the wood ducks, even if they are skittish and flighty.

Okay.... off to do some garden planning!

Oh the pipe that used to fill the pond that would be pretty cool if that was in operation to keep the pond full and please don’t walk out on ice that would be bad

Don't worry. I have a very health fear of it when it's frozen! Ha!
