When I woke up early this morning, I thought the moon was still up. But it had long since gone to bed. The brightness that I was seeing was something else.
Not exactly knee deep, but so very welcome...
This is the most snow we have had in three years. I hope this is a trend that contiues. I wish I could declare to the universe that we have suffered enough drought. 'This far and no further.' ....For those who know, they will know.
When I opened the chicken coop this morning, instead of the usual crowd of hens waiting at the door, I was greeted with a skeptical huddle of disgruntled girls up on the roost.
Well, except for Jill. She's made of sterner stuff.
But in their defense, this is what awaited them outdoors...
Brrrrr!
The wheat field is looking rather pretty with a layer of snow however...
I haven't been out to see, but last I looked, not one hen was venturing forth.
I'm glad for their snug little house.
If they haven't come out in an hour or so, I'll bring their food and water to them inside.
Not exactly a great morning for enjoying the swing. Can you spot the buck in the field?
Here, I'll give you a closer look....
Those are S's horses in the background. I'm going to be in charge of feeding them while she is gone to her mother's house far away for Thanksgiving. There's a cat to feed and a fire to build once a day. It's what we do for each other in the country in the winter around here. :-)
I'll be holding down my own fort during her absence. It looks cold on the outside, but inside Bruce is handling the heating situation with his usual grace. I often sing to him on cold mornings while warming my toes .... "Nobody does it better.... makes me feel sad for the rest. Nobody does it half as good as you... baby you're the best!" in my most audatious stage voice. Sunny's used to it. She ignores me. But I think Bruce likes it.
By the way... she totally approves of the weather today. Just in case you were wondering.
Here she is a couple of years ago, warming her fanny in front of our Bruce.
Front and center with Bruce is prime real estate in our house in the winter.

Okay, time for me to thumb through my pie cookbook. This year, I'm thinking about baking some kind of non-traditional pie for the feast. How about Grapefruit Custard pie? There's actually a recipe for that in the book!
( Have you taken leave of your senses? NO ONE in their right mind would want to eat a Grapefruit Custard pie!)
No? I think you may be right... I'll keep looking.
May you all have a Happy Thanksgiving!
With or without grapefruit pie. :-)
