Chicken Science
Tue Jul 04 2017

So yesterday morning when I was letting the chickens out of the coop, I found something unusual on the poop board just under their roost. Two unfinished eggs. What? Two eggs that hadn't finished all their steps. Chickens, when they are laying have a progression of eggs in various stages of completion inside them. An assembly line if you will. Well, I think that these eggs came from Lydia who hasn't laid an egg in months. I think she is starting up her production line again and these are a couple of 'test runs'. The fact that they both came out on the same night would also help explain their lack of wholeness. DSC03491 The shells were so thin and delicate that they broke from just a 5 inch drop. AND onto a rather soft bed of stall dry that would have cushioned them somewhat. But they were too fragile for even that much shock. [That's stall dry, which is basically a different form of cat litter stuck to the eggs because when they first emerge from the chicken, they are wet.] Also, they don't have much pigment, which is another layer of completion for a proper egg. I surmise they belong to Lydia because they have her signature flattened oval shape. But it's a little hard to tell under these conditions. As the days go by, we will see if she gets her machinery calibrated and starts popping out durable goods. We will see if my detective work is correct. It will be easy to tell, because Lydia's eggs are unique in shape. DSC03492 Chickens are amazing creatures.   lime wild

They are amazing creatures! Thanks for the science lesson. I didn't know any of this stuff about eggs.
