Yesterday, my friend S. asked me if I would drive with her over to town, 30 miles away to pick up her car that had been in the shop and drive it home for her. I said sure. So, we went over there, I got in her car and headed home, while she went off to an appointment she had.
I stopped at the library in the next town over from me and picked out some books from their dollar shelves out in the hallway. I took my time, and found five of them to bring home. Back on the road, it was getting near lunch time and I remembered I didn't have much to eat at home because I really needed to do some grocery shopping later in the week. So, I decided on the spur of the moment to have lunch at the corner coffee shop in my town.
I ordered a sandwich and was sitting there eating when a man came in and asked if they made Americanos, she said yes and started to make it for him. Then he said, by the way, do you happen to know anyone who knew the ____ family here in town?
When he said the name, I snapped my head up and looked closer at him. I said out loud, louder than I should have in a public place, [although there was only one other person there] the name he had just asked about. He looked over at me and I saw his whole face. I said, DANNY? And ran across the room, and before I grabbed him to hug him, told him who I was. I'm sure we look very different now to each other.
He is a childhood friend I haven't seen for we estimated forty years! And I do mean childhood, because we used to play together from the time we were about 10 years old! We were in the same class at school, and our fathers were friends. We had so many adventures growing up. Back then my brother and I and all the kids we knew were practically feral. We left the house in the morning and only came home at dinner time. Our little town is bordered on one side by a creek and the other side by the mountains, and we explored ALL over.
He was on his way North to visit his son and decided to make a short detour into our childhood home to see if he might run into someone he knew. Me?? I was just out on an errand for a friend and out of my usual routine. Ordinarily, I would have been at home with my nose in a book or something.
Anyway, we sat there and talked until the place closed at 2 o'clock. I told him we were no longer going to lose track of each other and promised to stay in touch from now on.
We said over and over it was a miracle that we were both in the same place at JUST the right moment. But really, it was HIS miracle, because he was looking for people who might remember his family, and I was just doing a favor for a friend and got hungry.
That's why it was Danny's miracle. I just got to participate in it.
Somewhere.... angels are smiling, because they pulled it off. I think they should get extra points for style and grace.
( 😭That's so, b b b b yuitifull)
Yep, a story to make a grown parenthesis cry. We have officially reached peak miracle all around.
