Pommes de Terre

I could stand the suspense no longer.

I went digging for gold in my garden.

And I found it!

[album 65561 Taters2.JPG]

New German Butterballs and one wayward Purple.

Look closely and you will see some of them still have their umbilical cords in their little belly buttons. My plan is to make creamed new potatoes and peas for dinner. My oh my.

I must admit, of all the vegetables I have grown, potatoes are my favorite.

There is something miraculous about digging right into the earth and finding something so versatile and wonderful to eat.

And there is a specific blessing to say for foods of this kind....

"Baruch ata Adoni, eloheinu melech ha olam, boray pri ha adamah."

"Blessed are you Lord our God, King of the universe, Who brings forth fruit from the earth."

If I had the space to have a really nice potato bed, I probably would grow them. But here, with our ten square feet of garden space, they are just too impractical and I can't taste enough difference between homegrown and store-bought. Also, I can never tell when to dig! I certainly don't end up with a bowl as nice looking as yours! I love the one lone purple spud there in the middle of the purple bowl, it's lovely.

Besides, you aren't supposed to grow tomatoes where potatoes have been grown before because of some potato disease that tomatoes can get. I'm sure you understand how I feel about anything that limits my ability to grow tomatoes, the food of the gods!

    Happy gardening!

They are beautiful!! I think potato may be my favorite vegetable, too.

Oh, my, I haven't had creamed potatoes and peas since I can't remember when. I need to rectify that.

    Bless the day.
