Orange Harvest
Tue Jan 18 2011

Yesterday, Hub Man went out into the back yard and fetched our crop of oranges off the tree. I can't say we had a bumper crop, but the ones that DID ripen are beautiful. They are Clementines, though not seedless. Small like a tangerine and sweet as honey this year. I think it's all the cold weather. I read somewhere that citrus trees actually like cool nights... up to a point of course.

Anyway, here are some resting in a bowl:

And some ready to eat:

It is a most satisfying thing to have food growing in your own yard. Even if it is in small quantities.

I can't imagine growing citrus fruit in the back yard. Especially after today's ice storm, it makes your local sound absolutely tropical.

I'm with Salamander... as I look out my window at the swirling snow and bone-chilling temps, I am amazed (and somewhat envious) of your crop of clementines. Luscious bowl of orangey deliciousness!

RYC: They've said we could still be getting aftershocks for another year or so, so we kind of have to get used to them!

They are gorgeous and happy to hear they taste as wonderful as they look. I need to get to picking the Meyer lemons off our tree.
