Hen Harvesters
Fri Jun 19 2015

It's almost the summer solstice. This does not seem possible. Though the sun coming up before 6 AM is not to be denied. It's hard not to be an early riser under these conditions. It's about this time of the year when I think nothing will ever come of my garden. The plants are up, but not putting on their major growth yet. I'm nervously waiting for my second planting of root crops to sprout. I felt mildly better about it when I heard that a very experienced gardener in the valley who writes a column in the newspaper was having the same problem and had to replant some of her garden too. But still.... I  SO want carrots again this year!  Sometimes I still feel like an amateur gardener. In the chicken run, I decided to open up my little wheat and clover field and let the hens have their way with it. Turns out they knew exactly what to do... Hen harvest2   They grab a stalk of wheat and snip it to break the head off and then start dismembering it on the ground. Hen harvest1 Red Hen Lecturing   I feel so .... proud.... sniff. It's not exactly tidy. But before long, this area will be thoroughly worked over I'm sure. While the hens were busy at their work this morning, I decided it was time to harvest some lavender. My plants aren't very big yet, so the stems aren't long an elegant like the mature plants produce. But these will dry just as nicely and I'll have flowers to put in the nests all winter. Lavender harvest     Sorry for the slightly blurry picture. The back room is a little cave like and gets little light. Though this is perfect for drying these beautiful things... Well, off I go. Perhaps I should go down into the garden and read to the root crop bed. Maybe THAT will make them want to wake up and grow. lime-wild
