It gets worse

My interpretation of the COPPA law is that we may actually have to do what the other diary sites have apparently done and that is to ban kids. This will suck, but there is no way we can possibly hope to get parental consent to allow their kids to post information on to the web. The problem is that if someone under thirteen posts that they’re under 13, then, even if we dont store identifying information ourselves, they just did, and so we are liable to get that permission first.

This is amazing.

The other alternative is to simply ban people with American IP addresses. That would solve the problem right there and then, since we can’t guarantee whether people are under or over 13 or not, but we can guarantee whether they are using American allocated IP addresses.

Suggestions folks, particularly from Americans who might have some knowledge of this?
