Well, great news… The server was running nice and fast for about, err, 10 hours or so. And then crashed when it tried to do the nightly update!! Its done that once before, where the whole scripts just consumed all the database connections and left none for the web… Thats what happened this morning too……

The system slowdown was due, we think, to a database query not using an index to find the information it needed… After looking deeply into the MySQL manual we discovered we could have the database actually tell us which queries were running slowly.
